What is best treatment for anxiety disorder?

Unfortunately, there is no single treatment that can reliably treat someone  suffering from anxiety disorders. Our counsellors use some of the most widely researched and proven treatments.  For anxiety, and depression, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT along with mindfulness techniques are proven to be some of the most effective and we use these treatments to address the causes of anxiety that are unique to you  and your life. My therapies are designed to address the unique root causes of your anxiety, and directly addressing these issues, giving you greater control and peace of mind.   

How do I support someone with depression and anxiety

If you know someone suffering from anxiety and depression then you know they need a lot of support. It is easy for them to become convinced that they are a burden to others, and to alienate themselves from those who love and want to help them. Be there for them when you can, and encourage them to speak to someone who can change their perspective.  If their anxiety or depression is affecting their daily functioning, it’s important that they seek professional help as soon as possible.  Untreated, depression and anxiety usually get worse over time.


Is it okay to seek counselling on my own if I feel that I’m depressed and need help?

Of course. You don’t need anyone’s permission to seek help, and there is no shame whatsoever in deciding that you need help, even if you’ve made that decision for yourself. Helping yourself can be the best thing you can do for yourself and for the people who love you.


How do you help someone with low self esteem?

Low self-esteem can be a challenging problem, because if you’re  suffering from low self-esteem you may not acknowledge that your condition can be improved. You are taught how your thinking contributes to low self-esteem. The most important thing in treating low self-esteem is teaching you through therapy that you have the power to change yourself and feel and be more positive about yourself.


How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy allows you and your partner to openly discuss your concerns about the relationship.  Initially, the counsellor listens to both of you to gain an understanding of the problem and assess the health of your relationship.  This gives you time to fully share your concerns, and this provides the therapist with a full picture and appreciation of your relationship.  This is done with respect and without judgment with the goal of helping you both better understand yourself and each other.  The initial assessment process may take several sessions.  

The assessment allows the therapist time to provide the best strategies and options  for improving your relationship which you practice in session and try at home, allowing these new positive techniques to become your new way of working through problems together.

We need couples counselling but my partner won’t go?

Sometimes a partner is not ready when you are, but the good news is that changing yourself improves the relationship.


What are the best treatments for chronic PTSD?

PTSD is a serious and complex problem that may require a range of treatments to correct. The most appropriate treatment may be determined by the source of the PTSD, and an examination of the treatments that have been exhausted already.  PTDS can leave you feeling isolated, misunderstood, chronically anxious, depressed, angry and suicidal, as well as other serious problems.  Determining where you have been most affected by PTSD allows you and the therapist to determine what needs the most immediate attention.  Depending on what is being addressed will determine which treatment techniques will be used.  Trauma affects all aspects of your life and the most successful approach means addressing the most critical issues first and working towards the less critical, but important issues.  The process of treatment progresses towards freedom from the PTSD, and deeper self-understanding and greater inner-strength and growth.
